The winning projects chosen each year for the Custom Home Design Awards (CHDA) survive round after round of scrutiny from the judges, so something about their design and execution keeps them in the running as others fall away. For several past CHDA winners, one such quality is a thoughtfully placed touch of bold color that enlivens elevations. Used judiciously, color is an eye-catching option to spice up traditional or contemporary exteriors. Eric Logan, principal at Jackson Hole, Wyo.-based Carney Logan Burke Architects, suggests that “it’s a small move that has a great impact.”
“In Jackson Hole it’s very difficult to get something builtespecially in a subdivisionthat doesn’t look like everything else,” Logan says.

I come from a family of non-conformists. My dad was the product of a line of labor shit-disturbers of the first order; my mom came from milder stock but was herself a civic activist of unparalleled backbone. I spent my childhood marching for racial equality, farm worker rights, and peace in Vietnam. So perhaps it’s inevitable that I have come to view myself as a green building revolutionary.
In fact, I believe that YOU are a revolutionary. Why? Because building green is all about effecting change – replacing the “normal” way things are done with a far better way. It’s ab

Many people want the royal look that comes with Egyptian home decor, but they also think that it is going to cost them their weight in gold. The truth is, Egyptian decor is a luxurious way to add a little royal touch to your home in a way that nobody else will, in a budget that is right on track. Whether you want to add a simple piece or some Egyptian art, Egyptian decor is only as expensive as you want it to be.
The gold that was found in the infamous King Tut’s tomb is one reason why people think Egyptian decor is going to cost a king’s fortune. If you want to truly spend a king’s fortune, you can certainly go ahead and do so. However you can create the ambience of the Egyptian Pharaoh’s era with something as simple as Egyptian decorations like our Altar of the Goddess Bastet which will add a mystical Egyptian tone to any room for under $15.
Art from the Egyptian era is another way to incorporate an Egyptian theme without re-creating Tut’s tomb in your living space. A temple wall sculpture may be all you need to create the focal point you seek for less than $75.
The truth is, unless you are actually buying gold for your Egyptian theme, your budget can be as low as you want it to be while still achieving the same effect.

The Wounded Warriors Home Project is no ordinary veteran’s housing. It’s designed in response to the new generation of veterans being created by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but it also has a personal touch. The home designs sprang from the mind of Michael Graves, an architect who has been paralyzed since 2003 and knows what it’s like to have limited mobility and special needs.
“I wanted to design something veterans would be proud to live in,” Graves says. “Something that looks normal.”
The prototype project (designed by Michael Graves and Associates and IDEO) is a partnership between Clark Realty Capital and the U.S. Army. Consisting of two homes, the project aims to set a new standard in accessible design.
