Contrary to popular belief, a mattress doesn’t have to be hard to be good for you. The most important thing to consider when buying a new mattress is comfort. Providing your mattress has the right support structure for your needs, the amount of padding is entirely up to you. There are six types to choose from and most manufacturers make more than one type.
Continuous Coil
This is usually one of the cheaper types of mattress and is made from a single looped wire. If you share with a partner, you’re less likely to be disturbed by them moving around in the night, or vice versa. The coils do wear out easier than other types, especially with two people, so you may want to consider a harder wearing style that may be cheaper in the long run.
Open Coil
A similar design, these mattresses are made of single springs just fixed together by wire. People who favour this type report a better night’s sleep than those with Continuous Coil styles.
Pocket Sprung
The springs are sewn into their own pockets in this type of mattress, meaning that each spring will support your weight individually and providing better support. These are a very popular type of mattress as they do offer more support and comfort with the added bonus of less disturbance to your partner if you move around a lot in your sleep or vice versa.
Memory Foam
This type of mattress is great at relieving pressure on painful joints, but is usually quite a bit pricier than spring types. As the material is affected by temperature, you might find it a little unwieldy when you go to bed, and a little difficult to move once it moulds itself to your body shape. However, it can be a warm choice in winter and is comfort in the extreme once it warms up. Toppers are widely available at more reasonable prices if you don’t want to splash out too much.
