We’ve all heard of green roofs for homes, and for a few years we’ve had the luxury of sustainable pet homes that feature a green roof courtesy of Stephanie Rubin’s Sustainable Pet Design. But now ReadyMade magazine has made it easy for you to transform your pet’s current pad into an oxygen-producing oasis.
As ReadyMade points out, tossing your pet’s digs to purchase a Sustainable Pet Design home is pretty wasteful, and unnecessary. With some supplied from the hardware store and an afternoon of your time, you can build a green roof on your dog house that ensures your dog has a healthy space for catching a few Zs.
One of the most important products used in the transformation is AFM Safecoat Safe Seal, which can be applied to a wood dog house to form a block to prevent VOC emissions and leeching of formaldehyde from pressure-treated wood. This is really important because pets can be especially susceptible to toxic fumes.
Building the garden is fairly straight-forward if you’re handy, but it may be a challenge for novice DIYers because you’re not just topping the roof with a tray full of soil–proper drainage and sealing is an important step to keep your pooch from getting wet.
As silly as a green roof on a dog house sounds, even a small area will help filter air and provide a space for plants to grow, which supports biodiversity. A green roof will also keep the dog house cooler in the summer, and provide an extra layer for insulation in the winter, so your pooch and go green and be more comfortable.
